Post by Alexander from Kiti » Thu Aug 12, 2021 6:49 pm

It seems that there is undescribed here die crack added at auction
https://www.muenzauktion.info/auction/i ... id=3083713

The crack is on Obv. at 6 o'clock and is not present at https://www.coinsandcanada.com/coins-pr ... -cent-1947

CoinsandCanada is not the most accurate place to include or exclude from your searches. A die crack is an error and they actually tend to reduce the price. D/C's are very common, especially during and just after the war years, because steel was being used for the effort. Die cracks happen at a time during the striking of coins, so not all coins struck from the die will have it. Each die struck only so many Obverses, so some will have the crack and some not. Don't buy a coin because of a random die crack. They add nothing to value and many times drop it. I'm not sure what was your question about the auction.

I agree, that is not a desireable die crack.
In all denominations there are likely thousands of unlisted die cracks.

It's more of a distraction to help sell an average coin. Notice the large rim ding on the reverse ?
Knowledge is always key when searching raw coins.

This is not a question. This is the statement.
We have a list of errors. This item is not in the list. It means, that is should be added. That is all.

There are literally millions of errors on Canadian coinage, to list them all would require more time and resources than this forum could handle.

When I said that a D/C was an "error" above in my post, I meant that the die crack was not a "variety". Do not take my statement as an "error" to be literal. It just means that it was struck with faulty equipment. Not every anomaly to be found on a coin is an "error" that needs to be documented or even collected. As stated above, there are millions and millions of coins struck that are not "perfect". There is nowhere in the world that they can all be listed. A die crack is not considered a major "error" that is normally to be recognized or even collected. Die rotations, overstrucks, off-centers, machine-doubling, die deterioration doublings, and other anomalies are all considered errors and most ARE collected and documented, but not D/C's unless huge or prominent.

Unfortunately the last statements did not answer the question.

The reality is:
There is the list of the die cracks. It exists and does not depend on our desires anymore.
For example
#1929 1 cent 1947 - Die crack on the I of Georgivs

As the experts at this topic confirmed indeed the presented item is not in the list.

In which way we can add it?

As far as we noticed, no one proposed the procedure yet.

Go back one click to the forum page and then scroll all the way to the bottom and click on "members". At the top of the list is lightw4re and he is the site admin. He can tell you what you need to do or he may enter it himself. As you scroll the Coins and Canada site look for any post that has "admin" or "moderator" after the name. That's who you need to contact. I don't know if they will add it or not, since there are thousands of die cracks on Canadian coinage of all denominations and are quite common.
