1978 PMD or.....?

Post by Enyaw » Wed Jul 27, 2022 10:36 pm

I found this penny coin roll hunting and I was wondering if this could have happened during the minting process or was it someone trying to fake it, PMD. Thank you.

Looks real to me but I'm no expert in this type of coin just fascinated with them

I can’t see how this could possibly happen during the striking of the coin.
The reverse looks like damage and the fact that the damaged section has a rim
and shows large beads while the original Cent has small beads eliminates any
thought of a double strike. By the same token, I can’t say how this was done.
I am going to say it is PMD unless it can proven it was done at the mint.
Maybe if SPP-Ottawa, sees this, he can shed some light on it .
Strange one indeed.

If the rim and beads are recessed, then you are right John 1000 and that would account for the
damage on the reverse but to me they looked raised, that is why I was questioning it.
Perhaps the OP can verify if the second image is raised or contuse.

Damaged coin. The collar die would not permit the metal to move outside of the rim.

Yes, it is recessed and I was wondering if it could have happened at the mint. Thanks for the replies they have answered my question.
