1962 Hanging 2 Notched 2 (Zoell P86D)?

Post by Gerryinthe6ix » Sat Aug 26, 2023 2:44 pm

After many years of searching, I finally came across a 1962 hanging 2 cent with the elusive “notched 2”. I first ran across this variant at Torex in the early 2010s when they were available from a few vendors. The ones they had were very high grade (and way overpriced) certified so I figured I would go through 1962 rolls and eventually find one. They were harder to find than I thought. I’ve purchased many 1960-era coin rolls and found countless Zoell varieties but never the notched 2. I suspect they were the last of the 1962s produced before the die was replaced or retired. At Torex I was told it was Zoell P86D and wrote that down but can’t find anything relating to that notation. Does anyone have any insight and can confirm the Zoell number? I wonder if those with certified examples have the correct Zoell notation to pass along.

I have no idea. When you look at the coin close up, the top section of the 2 is missing (on a slight concave) but otherwise perfectly aligned. The extreme tip of the “6” also exhibits the same angle. I thought maybe it was grease. I would love to see others to see if it’s a gradual change.
