1884 Cent with ?? in Loop of 2nd "8"

Post by Radius88 » Sat Mar 09, 2024 6:02 pm

I came across this 1884 Cent with "something" in the top loop of the 2nd "8" in the date. Has anyone seen this ? What are your thoughts on "what it is".?? Looks like a partial number. Thanks in advance for thoughts and Stay Well. Radius88

Looks like a small die chip on the post, not uncommon.

It just looks to me like the Vicky grunge that someone didn't get all out when they tried to clean it. Is it hard like metal or like the remaining grit/grunge around it? Whatever it is, it's in the lower loop of the first one as well and light colored.

I probed with toothpick and it is hard and "part of the coin". It has "shape" like a letter or number (unlike the 1st 8 lower loop that looks like a standard "chip" (again, not grime but metal). Initially I thought one possibility was a dropped clogged letter (that fell on that spot). If it is a "die chip" I would expect other examples minted, and hopefully another survives and will turn up.?? Thanks again.
