Re: 1891 Large cent
It's an 1891 Obv 2, SL/SD and a nice coin. On the tilted photo, it looks VF-30, but the head-on looks like VF-20. The missing serif on the N in Regina is normal for the 1891's, but there are some repunched. Your coin Trends at more than $170, so nice pick up. To tell the difference between an Obv 2 and 3 is to look at the vertical slash on the E's. An Obv 2 is short and the 3 is very long.

Thank you thats a great pickup on the letter E's. I did not know that. Another question is there another way to tell a small date large letters besides the ball like shape on the bottom of the 9?

Does that pertain to all Canada large cents Long E-Short E to determine Type 2-Type 3 ?

The long slash on the E is good for the '91's, but '92 is a problem, because you had Obv 4's then. The Obv 4 will have the short slash like the Obv 2, but the chin/throat are rounded like an Obv 1. An Obv 2 has the split/creased chin/throat.
The SD/SL refers to the "leaves" not the letters. If you have any of the leaves touching the denticles, then it's a large leaf. If there is a nice space between them (look at 6:00) then it's small leaves. ALL small leaves are SD (small date). Yours is a SL/SD Obv 2. Yours is a nice coin and certainly worth keeping. Always look for the large slash E's on the Obv 3's ... so much easier than what Charlton says to look for.

I'll pop this thread up to the top, since there's good Vicky large cent info there.

Looking at the pictures, obv. 2

But closer pictures of the obverse could be helpful

It's much easier to look at the vertical cross on the "E's" to tell a 3 from a 2 or 4, regardless how worn the coin is.
