1943 Tombac
1943 Tombac
Picked this up a while back thought it was probably post mint damage but looking at it closer today I noticed what appears to be a cud on the A. Any thoughts on what could cause this?

Not a Cud. A cud involves the rim.
Looks like a lamination that has partially delaminated pushing the copper over the A

I think that it's just PMD, since the heavy scrape goes through both the fields and the design. It looks to me like something heavy and sharp started digging into the Reverse just to the right of the 9. It then carried on ENE through the design, carrying metal with it and deposited it on the "A".

i agree with bill
since it affects the design, it looks like post-mint damage

Looks like someone tried to scrape off the crud, evidence of this is apparent under the 19 and above the TS, as well as the obvious one across the field. Since the coin is already damaged, you could try to pry up the piece of metal with a toothpick, if you can, it would prove Bill’s thoughts on the matter.
