A friend asked me about this coin and I told them I would look into it. I cannot find any info other then it was most likely buried in dirt. I’m not believing this and was hoping I could get more info on it.

It looks like environmental toning. Being buried in dirt could be one of
the causes. In any case, it didn’t look like that when it left the mint.

1986 nickels are made of cupro-nickel, which is 75% copper and 25% nickel.
Weird toning like yours on cupro-nickel coins is not uncommon, especially if the coin has spent some time in the ground.

An acetone bath should show you if you have a dirty coin or a foreign planchet.
