2001 5 cent relief?

Post by CalicoJack » Wed Aug 24, 2022 2:24 pm

Good afternoon, I have always noticed that there was an unusual sheen on some 2001P Can. 5 cents. (I have noticed a couple 2007s as well), and I finally threw one up on my microscope. It seems to be some kind of low relief... or weak strike? Anyway, I have put up a picture of a normal 2001P(top picture), and the unusual sheen one. I can't find anything that mentions a relief variety on this year. I have noticed quite a few of them, just never really looked closely. They are always the 2001P variety if that matters. To the naked eye it looks very different, kind of like a polished matte finish. Thoughts?
Cheers!

Not any special finish. As the die is striking hundreds of thousands of coins, it becomes worn
and the fields are less polished and the relief loses detail.
Look at the difference in the detail on your two coins. Just part of the minting process.
