Hi,

New to this board and new to Canadian coins.
I have acquired some older Canadian coins (Queen Victoria, King Edward, King George V & VI era)
I'm hoping this board can educate me a bit.

To start, I was wondering if anyone can tell me about this tombac nickel that has "c" markings stamped on it. Also, a general question, what's the best way to sort through my coins and present them?

Welcome to the Forum.

Those are called counterstamps, they have been intentionally put on the coin after it was in circulation.
It is considered damage and adds nothing to the value of the nickel.
You can make them yourself with a punch set and hammer.

Did the counter stamps serve a purpose?...

The coins that I have have been pretty much sitting in an attic since the 40s to early 50s, dating from 1880s.
