1902 h/h & 1903 h/h

Post by Piepala80 » Mon Feb 20, 2023 12:16 pm

Can I ask. Is the 1902 large h over h and the 1903 small h over h a variety or is it a common coin. From my non shallow research it seems rare but what do I know. Lol

Your question does not make sense.
A variety can be a common coin.
The 1902H large H is a variety of 1902 yet it is the most common of all 1902 five cents.

I've been posted varieties on the 1 cent , 5 cent and dollar forum and people were telling me they weren't varieties even thought this website and Saskatoon coin club and the Charlton were noting them as a variety .
My question is how rare is the 1902 large h over small h variety and the 1903 small h over small h variety.
Thank you

You seem to use the term "rare" quite frequently in your questions. For most numismatists, "rare" means less than 30 are known to exist, with rarities 8 or 9 well less than 10 known. The repunched mintmarks are varieties, but still rather common. The L/S 1902 is valued at about 2-3 times what a common no mintmark or large is. The 1903's R/P's are about 3-4 times the price of the common one.

Thanks bill. I'll use scarce instead of rare.
I don't see many for sale h/h. I assumed it's harder to find. Also the coins I look for are mostly uncirculated. Unless very expensive I'll buy AU grades. So I'm assuming again these grades make it scarcer.
Some of us consider coins that are scarce also rare. It's a fine line.
Just line the 1883 canada 5 cents ob 4.
Some consider it rare, but I've seen them and own a VF-20 ICCS certified. I guess then it would make it scarce and not rare.
