1940 Newfoundland 5 Cent Double 0 Variety

Post by andy88bali » Fri Oct 18, 2024 9:17 am

The 1940 Newfoundland 5 cent piece comes in two known varieties. Pictured here are two examples to show the difference. The doubling "0" on the Double 0 variety is easily seen with the naked eye and the difference between the two coins is striking. Can you spot the difference it easily?

I see no doubled "0". But what I DO see is near "0" and a far "0", with the far "0" with a die chip in/on the "0".

I didn’t realize that there were “near 0” and “far 0” varieties attributed for this coin. And from what I’ve read it is the doubling that makes the “0” appear to be nearer.

No, the last coin has the "0" in a larger font.

I was introduced to an excellent resource for Newfoundland Coin Varieties by Barry M. Borsellino yesterday. It describes all five of the 1940 varieties. I discovered that this variety is the Type I Narrow Date Low 0. Thanks for your help. I thought this was the Double 0 variety only going on what was available on the Coins and Canada website. It would be good if the database here could reflect the information discovered in the Borsellino book. Thanks for your help in getting me to understand why this isn't a double 0 variety.
