1899 5 cents, high 9s

Post by lhnumis » Mon Jan 06, 2025 4:05 pm

Apologies for the late response. Thought to supply several images of the ‘99s derived from the COINSANDCANADA website and my subject coin.

The first is the image at the top of the webpage for the 1899 5 cents.
It appears to show the 9s high, with the second 9 higher than the first.

The second image is from the miscellaneous /unclassified section (same webpage as above) and appears to exhibit a high second 9 only.

The third image is derived from the “Right now on Ebay” ad 1/6/25 (same webpage as above). It appears to exhibit the date with all the numerals nearly in alignment…perhaps with the second 9 a small tick above the first.

The last is the subject coin which appears to exhibit the 9s high, with the first 9 higher than the second.

With 3,000,000 minted, perhaps other combinations may show up.

Thanks again Bill for your thoughtful analysis and insights…always much appreciated!

They handpunched the last 2 digits onto the date, so you will have spacings and placements all over the map for varieties. All are pretty normal. From your past posts, one of these days, you will find a true new variety, but you need to do some study to differentiate an error from a variety. Check out Wexler's extensive papers.
