I was going through a small lot of just over 50 x 1955 quarters to see if I had any of the double die reverse variety. Unfortunately, I did not. As I was doing this I checked for any obverse or reverse die breaks. In the lot I did discover one quarter with a die break, however the most interesting find was a quarter with obvious doubling of most of the legend letters. Attached is a PDF of some of the letters (GRATIA and the last A in REGINA) compared to a quarter that had no doubling.
There doesn't seem to be any mention of this potential variety for 1955 Quarters offered for sale on eBay nor could I see the doubling on any of the 30 out of about 60 listings where the images allowed probable identification. If anyone else has come across such a 1955, I'd very much like to know. It would be interesting to gauge how scarce this potential variety may be and if it merits addition into future coin catalogue editions. RD

Ok thanks for the info. Please see attached images of selected legend letters. If anyone would like to see a few other letters I will accommodate. As I stated previously, the majority of the letters show the DD effect.

It's not a doubled die.
It's machine doubling.

Agree, it's not a doubled die and that it's machine doubling (MD). A couple of the letters may also have some die deterioration doubling as the die wore and the edges of the design in the die wore away. It's not a variety and adds nothing to the value and may actually detract from it.

Thank you for that extremely useful info gentlemen. After reading the very interesting and educational info in the link you provided Bill there is no doubt this is mechanical doubling. As to the value the coin, it is only in Fine condition, however for me its value lies in the exemplification of this phenomenon and I will definitely keep it as an educational example. Besides, based on this being the only example I've seen so far our of over 50 x 1955 viewed it does seem to be an uncommon occurrence. Undoubtedly I may detect more of these as I scrutinize other coins. RD
