August 1999, "Manure Pile" Die Chip Progression

Post by Enyaw » Sat Mar 04, 2023 8:58 pm

I went through some mint rolls for August 1999 and found this 15 coin die chip progression by the C, broom and hay. The final coin has already been identified on this site but I thought it was interesting to see how it built up.
Photo 1 -Die chip started above the C and moved toward the hay and broom
Photo 2 -Closed the gap between the hay and broom
Photo 3 -Filled in more space between the hay and broom
Photo 4 -Started working it's way back toward the C
Photo 5 -Finished filling in by the Hay and C and stated a new die chip on the N

Here's mine:

In fact, there's also a nice progression set with these features.

1- Die chip over the "C"
2- Die chip over the "C" + die chip on the "N" OR "Legs". I don't know which one first, N or Legs.
3- Die chip over the "C" + "N" + "Legs". My coin. I would be surprizing that both N and Legs chips occur simulataneously.

Some discussions here about this coin:

@Enyaw Is there a chip between Leg's horse on your coins?

Hi SP67,
Thanks for sharing your photos/thoughts.
I have two full mint rolls with the full "manure pile" (die chips above the C and toward the hay pile and rake/broom). Looking at those coins the die chips between the horses' legs only show up at the same time the N die chip starts and not before (between coins 13 and 14 in my progression). I couldn't find coins showing the complete progression of the horse legs die chips they just appeared at the same time the N die chip started in the rolls I have.

Here are larger photos of the very start of the die chip above the C and four others as it progresses toward the full "manure pile". It sure is interesting to click through the 15 coins on my computer at full size and see each new die chip piece added on in succession.

Thanks for the additionnal pics...

As I said, I could be unlikely that both Legs and N chips occur exactly at the same time. But Die degration can be quite fast. So, maybe there's only few coins out there with one of these chips....

Your coins show a very nice Die degradtion progression. I love that...
This is a nice demonstration how fast degration occurs. I guess you found your coins within the same batch of Mint roll produced in the same periode of time, not weeks later.

It was lucky that this progression was in the 7 mint rolls I recently got from my bank. I went through all of the coins again to see if I missed the N to horse leg die chips and I found a couple coins that show the N die chip came first and then the die chip between the horse legs.
Photo 1 die chip on N and none between the horse legs
Photo 2 die chip on N and die chip between horse legs
