2006 10th anniversary specimen

Post by mstrkenn » Thu Jun 09, 2022 12:13 pm

I have a 2006 Specimen set with a twoonie that appears to have a silver insert rather than the copper. I haven't removed the coin from the case but the center is not magnetic. Any suggestions on how or where to get this coin verified?

I have seen this before on other year Toonies. It could be a couple
of things but first I have two questions.
What is the weight
Is it one piece or is it a separate ring and core like a regular Toonie

I have not removed from the specimen case so can't weigh it. It appears to be two different metals

I tested with a magnet and the outer ring is magnetic and the center is not. Two different materials. That is why I suspect the center is silver, possibly from the gold and silver 2006 coin?
Any suggestions as to where or how to get this coin verified?

The centers are copper-nickel plus some aluminum. Without seeing it, I'd guess that there was some kind of chemical reaction at the mint, during a wash/rinse, that turned the copper-nickel-aluminum silvery or it came from the holder.

As stated earlier, we are really going to need to see pictures and have the weight to help you.
You didn’t state where you are from so it is hard to tell you where to go to get it verified.

I'm reluctant to remove the coin from the specimen case. I'm in Regina

Without a picture and the weight, there is not much more we can do to help you.
You should be able to remove it from the specimen case without any damage.
It is remotely possible that you have a white gold core from the anniversary gold coin but without
the coin in hand, It would be hard to tell.
Suggest taking it into Barrie's coins in Regina for evaluation. They have been in business for 40 years
and seem to be reliable.
