1966 Silver Dollar Small or Large Bead
Anyone have an opinion on this 1966 Silver Dollar, I think it is a small bead. Anyone know what it would be worth?

From the photo it looks like it could be a small bead, but the I in Regina not exactly on the bead. It looks like it's just a little to the right of the bead, but still connecting with the bead. But it has been harshly cleaned, so no idea of value. From the wear, exclusive of the cleaning scratches, it looks to be VF, but the Obv not too pretty. I read somewhere that you just count the beads to see if large or small. Do a search for the numbers of small vs large. I forget where I had seen it, for this and any other large/small bead questions for different dates and denominations.

Welcome to the Forum
It is a Large Bead and in that condition, it is only worth the value of the silver.

Hi Bill, I have had this for probably 50 years or more, my Dad gave it too me, it has never been cleaned to my knowledge. Might be just the way my photo looks. I will do some digging re: the # of dots. Thanks for your input.Bill in Burl wrote: ↑Wed Jan 15, 2025 12:26 pmFrom the photo it looks like it could be a small bead, but the I in Regina not exactly on the bead. Hi Coinguy, I tried to sell this to a silver and gold guy. He took all my silver quarters, dimes and broken gold/silver jewelry I had, but this one he advised me to get it graded. Comparing this coin to this site, it sure looks like a small bead. It’s never been cleaned to my knowledge, and I have had it for over 50 years, never touched it. Not sure if it was the lighting from the room or just my iPad quality. It’s not an uncirculated coin, my Dad gave it to me when I was a teenager. Thanks for your response though.

I have to agree with Coin Guy. The distance between beads in the photo is too small, which would indicate a “large bead” variety. Small bead variety would have the same distance between beads, distance being the same as the size of one bead. Check out the pictures before you spend money grading it, on the Saskatoon Coin Club site, under “Article Index” - “Canadian One Dollar Varieties” - “Article index” - “1966 Obverse”. The pictures are excellent. The shop where you off loaded the junk silver was being cautious/kind, and probably didn’t want to make a major error in possibly ripping you off. I give him credit for honesty but from the pictures you’ve supplied, it looks large bead, me thinks!

Bill in Burl is also correct. The I in Regina would be aimed right at a bead on a small bead variety, and slightly to the right edge of a bead on a large bead variety...which your picture shows. You’d need a microscope or some pretty sharp eyes to focus in otherwise and count beads. Estimates of total in existence are 450-500 small beads, and 9.912 million large beads according to this site.
Re: 1966 Silver Dollar Small or Large Bead
I think for it to be a small bead there should be enough room between beads to insert another bead, looks like a large bead to me.

Unintentionally or not it has been cleaned possibly before you obtained it.
