Pretty 1914 large cent

Post by CanuckCoinGirl » Thu Jun 16, 2022 12:59 pm

This one is a coin that had been buried with another coin I wanted in a group. There were a couple in the groups I got from a US auction. Now looking at it, I think I love it. There are a couple others that are pretty awesome from the little groups.
Any grade ideas on this one? It's hard to capture the luster here, but it does have a shiny red/brown appearance.

Nice addition - I'll go with EF40

The 2 Obv's look like 2 different coins. The 1st one looks like VF-30, just based on the crown and mustache. The 2nd photo looks like XF-40, maybe weakly struck Rev.

I should pull out the scope for all photos, it's just hard to get pictures because it is more for details and won't take a whole coin image, and it will no longer connect to my computer so needs small sd cards.

Why this one is hard to judge for me is the eye appeal versus the characteristics, so I appreciated the other eyes on it. There is clear wear on the edge of the eyebrow, ear, bottom of the beard, moustache, and the cross patty jewel on the crown extending a little less than half way to the ball. It is not a weak strike, although I can see why that one photo and comparison might lead to that thought. There are marks from use, but nice detail remains throughout. It's got good luster and with the exception of the mark on the obverse G, it is very pleasing to the eye. I have MS coins that I don't come back to as often as this one.

It's definitely been a circulation coin, so not worth much or worth grading, but still pretty.
