New to coin collecting. Is this anything exceptional?

The only thing "exceptional" is the number of staples you needed for the 2X2.

It was issued to commemorate Canada’s centennial but with over 345 million minted it is not rare.
Never seen eight staples in a 2x2, 3 or 4 is the norm. Is there a reason?

the number of staples are worth more than the coin in the 2x2
