From Bank of Canada to Prime Minister

Post by CanuckCoinGirl » Thu May 01, 2025 6:29 pm

It might be too early to know, but perhaps some the the group bank note aficionados do have a suspicion. Like him or not as a new political figure, Mark Carney's name is on a lot of Canadian Currency. There is already the issue of value that is discussed in guides and on forums - some was worth more and some was worth less, but I am curious whether the election and the role as the new PM will impact the value of Carney notes at all.

Mark Carney was the governor of the Bank of Canada for 5.5 years so there's hundreds of millions of banknotes with his signature. However, something interesting did happen at the end of his term. The current Bank of Canada governor (Tiff Macklem) was the senior deputy & his and Carney's signatures were on the last Journey (paper) series & the beginning of Canada's first polymer series.

In short, there were only seven $5.00 prefixes released in 2011 with the "Macklem-Carney" signature combo. These are HAE, HAF, HAG, HAH, HAJ, HAK & HAL but it appears they were called back due to the 2013 release of the more secure polymer FIVES. All these notes have premiums (some higher than others) but they don't come to market very often due to low Charlton Book Values (IMO).

And the polymer HBG "Macklem-Carney" signed FIVES did not appear as expected (just HBG Macklem-Poloz) until a year or more later when a limited # were released. These aren't as tough as the Journey FIVES but they are collectible & noted in Charlton pricing tables.
