Canadian banknotes to dispose of

Post by jaj » Sat Jun 10, 2023 1:05 pm

Grew up in Canada and collected banknotes. Now live in the US and wish to dispose of them. Will be in Toronto in late July. Can you suggest a dealer to take them to? Most are circulated; some are mint. Not sure if there are any gems in the lot. Most are likely worth just face value, if I had to guess. Do banks still take $1 and $2 notes?
Thank you.

I have collected for many decades & I would say about 5-10% of my notes come from dealers (& those were mostly from negotiations at shows). There was one dealer, Don Olmstead, who was particularly fair & helpful but unfortunately passed away a few years ago. Most of my notes have been purchased online since about 2003 (so last 20 years). When I go into a LCS its usually for supplies. Here's a link to find a store you wish to sell your collection:
https://en.numista.com/outings/index.ph ... on&p=1&v=1

I've taken the liberty of re-formatting your list to bring attention (BOLD) the notes any collector will be interested in provided the note is in EF to UNC condition. Some will be desired in very circulated condition. Take a look at this PMG Grading Scale link & try to familiarize yourself with the condition of your notes (You'd also be better equipped if you bought a used Charlton Catalogue of Government Paper money on eBay- no need to buy new but just get a cheap copy & this will give you a better idea of the values or use this sites pricing tables)
https://www.pmgnotes.com/paper-money-gr ... ing-scale/

I deleted all regular run notes but could have deleted some of your better notes (Uncirculated is the term for "mint" - "mint" is a term used for coins) if the notes are in great uncirculated condition (dealers want these too). Typically, all dealers are interested in 1935, 1937 & 1954 (especially Devil's Face since these are sought by world currency collectors).

You could walk into a Local Coins Shop (LCS) near you & sell these b/c any US dealer would be interested too. You can use the Numista link to source a LCS near where you live. The 1967 & 1973 are less sought after (will draw less buzz) but the *asterisk replacements are definitely desirable. This *EV0090139 $20 is very uncommon & should command a decent premium well above FV.

Just remember to be patient & don't use language like "dispose of" or sound to motivated to "cash out" your collection & you should do fine (won't be taken advantage of too bad).

Hi,
Please feel free to email us at elitecoin0601@outlook.com

We're in the GTA and would possibly be willing to purchase all of them.

Cheers
Moe

Thank you. I found that this website has the number of each bill printed. You advice is sound. What it means is that I need to do some homework before selling the banknotes.

-Yes, taking your time to discover exactly what you have will translate into saving a little more on your transaction. I retained some of the consecutive serial # you posted simply b/c these notes may be in higher grade (like EF to AU or maybe even UNC).

Re:

These are radar serial numbers and command a significant premium (esp in higher grades).

Keep in mind that the figures you will see here (or in Charlton) are Book Value (BV) & only provide a starting point. If the note is in excellent condition (has nice eye appeal) then you can expect to receive better compensation than if the note has soiling, tears or other issues. They're also figures one would expect if one sells the note him/herself (rather than a dealer's offer which will be considerably less).
A Charlton guide (as suggested) will also give you a better idea what you have in terms of signature change-overs or short prefixes (always slightly more than regular prefixes).

Most are circulated, but several are crisp without wear or circulation.
