1973 double dollar set: Will dissassembly affect value?

Post by Relic » Fri Apr 19, 2013 10:58 am

Just received a 1973 double dollar RCM set.
The edge of the penny has a black substance where it contacts the red felt.
Seems there was a humidity issue at some point in the last 40 years
The other coins are all ok.

I would like to take the set apart and clean/wipe the rim of the penny.
Would also like to look at the back of the quarter to see if it is a small or large bust.

Should I take all of the coins out of the RCM book and put them in individual capsules?
What is the best way to remove the coins without touching them by hand?
Will this affect the value?
The penny is not very attractive as it is now...
