That is the way they are supposed to be, that is the design.

Like Coinguy says, that's the way it's supposed to be. Your arrow points to a halyard line, not any extra sail or missing sail. Don't believe what you see in the "variety" section of this site, since they are just submissions from members, nothing official. . IT is not a recognized variety and the photos in the variety section came from who knows where and what it looks like in hand. After 10 years, if it's true, someone would be bragging about it if it is a "real" variety.

I still disagree I looked at it pretty thoroughly and I'm still holding firm ..
I put my coin next to a real one and I can see it ..?

That is the frosting, there are about a dozen different varieties with the frosting in different positions.
Technically one is not worth more than the other although some sellers will use it as a selling tool.

Anybody on this forum will gladly acknowledge the fact when you have a winner but all you have shown
us so far (except for the buffalo nickel) is what is regarded as "Pocket Change" with little or no value.

Re: 2012 $2 HMS Shannon with extra sail
I have an extra sail shannon.
As you see in your example picture of the extra sail, it is the same color as the other sails.
Yours is not the same color as the other sails.

Re: 2012 $2 HMS Shannon with extra sail
If what you guys are referring to ... the photo of the "missing sail" in the variety section of this site, there is no missing sail. As coinguy stated, it is just frosting. Take a look at the right of the aft-most mast where it should be a clear field or sky, but it's frosted. Below the sails above the main deck, you should see a clear coin field or sky, but you see frosting. What makes the coin in the CaC variety section look strange is that they did NOT frost the clear field or sky between the forward most halyard lines. They frosted the coins/dies to make them pretty and forgot or misplaced where they should put it. They are all worth $2.

Re: 2012 $2 HMS Shannon with extra sail
The photo on the left contains frosting where there should be open "sky" this frosting is exactly the same frosting that appears on the sails. this makes it appear to be a sail, which it is not.
There is no missing sail.

My 2018 charlton lists this as an extra sail variety.

Well, then evidently the 2018 Charlton, as it is every year, filled with more errors and wrong information that takes more than 10 fingers to count. That's why coin sites are so valuable ... to try to extract the factual from the hypothetical and inaccurate. Annual coin guides and books need to be used as just one of the many references that need to be consulted. In this case, what sails and lanyards should look like on an early 19th century vessel.

I've seen over a thousand of these twoonies, and i have only seen one that has frosting where there should not be frosting. That is a variety. It has absolutley nothing to do with what the.. ship should look like. Didn't you write for charlton bill?

Re: 2012 $2 HMS Shannon with extra sail
On the example in the CaC variety section, there is frosting all over the place where it doesn't belong and coinguy stated that there are examples of frosting in various other places on other coins . A variety is something that the mint puts on a coin "on purpose" and it is approved or implemented by the mintmaster or his foremen on the floor. A variety is a coin that has been produced by good/approved dies, good/proper planchets, on properly maintained equipment, with the proper pressures/force, and with all the machinery/mechanisms operating as they should. Anything else is an error, not a variety. I would call this error "ill-tasting" frosting
As far as Charlton, I was on the small working group that developed/published the 2011 Charlton variety section on Vicky cents.

Actually, I don't appreciate this at all!!
It's not funny, but it is inappropriate, both for the site, and to the members.
If you are trying to get something special from rolls of circulation coins, or from pocket change, you are unlikely to get much interesting. Most that are sold to 'new collectors' have already been gone through in almost all cases. I do appreciate the enthusiasm that you have gone through things with, and like that you are asking and trying to get information, but with this, I am just angry.

I reported the "heads/tails" to the moderator a hour after it appeared. I even sent an email to admin as well to remove the childish stunt. That's not welcome on any site.
