1885 Newfoundland 50 Cents

Post by ahydroboy@aol.com » Tue Jan 24, 2023 10:57 am

I noticed the 5 in the date seems to be lower than what other pictures show.
Is this a repunch ? I know it is worn , however the inside bottom of the 5 is still lower than the bottom of the adjacent numbers.
Also , any thoughts on the grade?
Thanks

I'd say VG 8-10. I think the 5 took a hit so it's misshaped. Like some other coins, both Canada and Newf, used the same dies from previous years with the last digit hand-punched in rather than making a complete new die from the master.
