Halifax Coin Club First Medal

A small group of coin collectors met in the Fellowship Room of the Y.M.C.A. in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. A period of discussion ensued and it was agreed that a formal club should be organized with the purpose of the club being to promote and encourage the collection and study of coins, medals, tokens and paper money, and to cultivate fraternal relations among collectors. Thus, the 3rd of December 1958 saw the beginning of the Halifax Coin Club.

In addition to the members mentioned above, the remaining charter members were; Mrs. George MacLaren, and Mr. J. R. B. Rankin.
The year, 1958, was an interesting time to begin such a club. It was the 100th anniversary of the introduction of the decimal coinage system to the Province of Canada. Also, it was the 50th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Mint in Ottawa.
The first medal issued by the Halifax Coin Club was in 1961 and it was to celebrate the introduction of the decimal coinage system to the Province of Canada. The medal was struck at the Royal Mint in London, England and was issued in bronze, silver, 9 carat gold and 18 carat gold. The medal was designed by Mitchell MacDonald.
The club was hosting of the Canadian Numismatic Association's annual convention in 1964 and again in 1970.
Publications have been issued by the club, it has been active in the community promoting the numismatic hobby, and many medals have been issued over the years.
